Snailmail Roundup #9: From Richmond, California & Detmold, Germany

Good afternoon Everyone!

I must admit that I’m playing it lazy today, and so plan to lounge on the couch until it’s time to go to work.

This week, I was glad to hear from Elsie here in California. I fell out of contact with her for a while because she moved, and I must not have received her change of address as a letter I sent her was returned. Can’t wait to reconnect with her.

I also received this awesome parcel from Franziska, in Detmold. I am drinking one of the teas she sent and look forward to drinking the others in the next few days. (Especially now that it’s raining again. Though, here’s hoping the rain doesn’t pick up until after work.) The Heimatland Lippe magazine she sent me is annotated with notes, which is a wonderful way to learn about the place, since I can’t read German, and of course, her letters are always a blast to read.

She also sent these really pretty stamps, which I have adhered to my Midori Notebook.

Well, I have to get writing, and then get to the P.O. for some stamps. Have a great day and week everyone!

Snailmail Roundup #8: Catching Up

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay. I was home for the last few days, where the only internet available was my very strained data plan. Well, here’s the mail received the last couple weeks, enjoy!

Letter from Kirsten, in Portland, OR:

Seeing the magazine page of Saturn only makes me want to go to outer space even more. Fingers crossed normal people can go there before I die, because I promise you I will be on that ride the moment I hear about it.

Letter from Sokeh, in Mexico:

Isn’t her stationary cute? (Are you shocked that my favorite character is Eeyore?)

Letter from Derick, in LA:

Derick’s zines are always fun to read, and it’s thanks to him that I’ve started working on my own–albeit, at a very slow pace.

Snailmail Roundup #7: from Detroit, MI

Greetings everyone,
Similar to the supply exchange between me and a girl from Arizona, I also met Coco via Tumblr. In this case, I had reblogged a photograph of one of her “traveling postcards” (click here for said reblog), and Coco messaged me saying that she was the one who’s project this was, and offered to send me a few as well. I have yet been able to take a picture with these cards, but plan to take some tomorrow if I go to any of my favorite places.  I was also able to send off a couple to other penpallers (yes, that’s a word . . . in my dictionary). Will be sending out a few others as more letters come.

 Well, have a great week!

Stationary Supply Trade

Hello All (again),

This time, I wanted to share with you another project that I did. A few days ago, I was on Tumblr (procrastinating, as usual) and saw a post about a stationary supply exchange. So, I contacted the person and she agreed to do a supply exchange with me; here’s what I sent her!

Snailmail Roundup: #6: From My Hometown

Hello All,

Sorry this is so late. I have finally completed and turned in two portfolios to my professors this quarter, and one of those just so happened to be my Senior Portfolio. I’m almost done people, two more quarters and I finally have my English and Spanish BAs!

But, on another note. Mail was slow last week, not that it was any less interesting. In fact, the postcards I received from Mona in my hometown were absolutely amazing! Mona and I have been friends since High School, and both of us share an affinity for writing and crafts. Recently, she went to LA to visit her family and was able to go to Disney Park, here’s what she got me there:

I’m not a hardcore Disney fan (Though, a lot of the most recent stuff is actually pretty good!), but Mona knows that one of my favorite movies is Beauty and the Beast. I now have to find the perfect frame to display this postcard, that is, if my mother doesn’t steal it from me first. (She’s a fifty-two-year-old woman with the heart of a child. And like with children, you can’t say ‘no’ once they give you the puppy eyes. I’ll enjoy this card while I still have it.)

Well, onward to the next posts!

How I Met My Pen-Pals!

How I Found My Pen-Pals

 Greetings and salutations,

I hope this Fridays is going wonderfully for everyone. For a while now I’ve been thinking about writing a post on how to find your very own pen-pal. The thing is, I’m nowhere near the authority on pen-palling so I’ve decided to write about how I met my pen-pals, and not how everyone else does. Here are the three principle ways I met them:

  1. Tumblr: Three summers ago, I was home alone and bored out of my mind. Having nothing better to do, I, of course, went online and started surfing through Tumblr. I remember seeing a post on pen pals, and decided to look up the tag through the search function. Lo and behold, I discovered several ads from Tumblr users searching for pen-pals. In fact, over the following year or so, I noticed a small snail mail movement begin. More and more people started looking for people to write to, to connect to in a non-electronic manner. Here, I met Chris, Erica, Franziska, and several others.
  2. Interpals.net: This is another social network that looks to connect people all over the world, and is one of the few that is actually focused on pen-palling. It reminds me a bit of MySpace, if anyone  remembers that.
  3. Through Others & Blogs: A couple of pen pals I met through other people, or through other bloggers. If you find someone’s blog and see that they have pen-pals, it doesn’t hurt to send them an ask to see if they’re still on the lookout for one more. In fact, that’s how I met Elisse!

A Few warnings:

Before all of you run off to find your own pen buddies, I do have a few warnings. The internet is, as we’ve often been told, a very dangerous place. In Interpals, for example, I did run across a few shady individuals, and so is not my go to place. There are creeps out there, and so, I suggest chatting with the people you ask online for a while. Exchange emails, and only once you’re sure that they’re okay, and that you’ll get along, exchange emails. If someone sets your spidey senses off, back off and avoid further contact. Also, on the less scary side, if  you don’t think you might get along, don’t exchange addresses and politely go on your way. This will save you a nice bit of money on postage. (As it can be expensive depending on what you’re sending and where.)

Otherwise, have fun! And please let me know if this helps, if you have any questions, or if you  manage to find your own pen-pals! I’d love to hear back from you!

PS: this post is a really late response to Steven at Made by you and I, who asked me to post about this over a month ago. My bad for the long wait!

Have a great day!

Outgoing: Towards a Fellow Blogger!

Good Morning Everyone!

Just wanted to share with you what I have prepared for the mail today. This is going out to none other than Tourmama616, at The Playground. For a while we chatted about becoming pen-pals, and have finally decided to take the dive. Here’s what I’ve prepared for her, and not including the surprise hidden inside the letter. Well, have a great day everyone!

Snailmail Roundup #5: Portland, OR & Maspeth, NY

Hello All,

I originally planned to have this up a lot earlier, but let’s just say that after work I was in serious need of a nap. A three hour long nap, to be exact. Well, enjoy!
